From Rigid Plans to Flexible Journeys: A New Way to Achieve Your Goals

By The KeepTabs Team

Goal setting is often messy, and that's a good thing. Real-world ambitions rarely fit into neat little boxes. They start as a spark of an idea, evolve as we learn, and often require a mix of different efforts to bring to life.

Yet, many goal-tracking tools force us to define the entire path from the very beginning. They ask us to choose: Is this a numbers game? A daily habit? A checklist of tasks? This rigidity creates friction and can even discourage us from starting at all. What if you don't know the exact path yet?

Our "Aha!" Moment: Goals are Journeys, Not Destinations

We took a hard look at how our app was structured and realized we were part of this problem. Our old system required you to lock a goal into a specific "type" from day one.

But a goal like "run a marathon" is never just one thing. It's a journey composed of many different kinds of steps:

  • One-time actions: "Buy proper running shoes."
  • Recurring habits: "Run three times a week."
  • Major milestones: "Complete a 10k race."

Forcing you to choose just one measurement type was like telling a builder they could only use a hammer. It was limiting and, frankly, not how achievement works.

Introducing Goal Steps: Your Goal, Your Way

So, we rebuilt our app's foundation around a simple but powerful concept: any goal can be broken down into a series of dynamic steps.

This is more than just a new feature; it's a complete shift in philosophy. Here's what it means for you:

  1. Start Simple, Evolve Naturally: You no longer need a perfect plan to start. Begin with just a title—your big, audacious goal. You can add the concrete steps later, as you gain clarity. This lowers the barrier to getting started and makes the process feel less intimidating.
  2. Mix and Match Your Efforts: Your goal is now a container for any kind of progress. Add a one-time "Action" to get the ball rolling, a "Habit" to build consistency, and a "Milestone" to mark major achievements—all under the same goal. The tool now adapts to your journey, not the other way around.
  3. Stay Motivated with Small Wins: Big goals can be overwhelming. By breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps, you create more opportunities to feel a sense of accomplishment. Checking off a small step provides the dopamine hit needed to stay motivated for the long haul.

A Partner in Your Progress

We believe the best tools are the ones that understand the nuances of human behavior. They should be flexible, forgiving, and designed to support the often messy, non-linear path of personal growth.

This architectural change is our commitment to that belief. We're moving away from being a rigid goal tracker and toward becoming a flexible companion for your life's most important journeys. We can't wait to see what you achieve.
